The ONE Thing in 5 minutes: the focusing question that cuts your to-do list to a single domino — and why it works.

Book: The ONE Thing — Gary Keller

TL;DR — Success is not about doing more. It is about doing the right thing. Ask the focusing question, find your lead domino, and give it protected time every day.

The big idea

Your focus is everything that matters.

Your to-do list is lying to you. It says everything matters. It does not.

A few things matter a lot. Most things matter almost none. Winners find the few and ignore the rest.

Think of dominoes. One domino can knock over another that is 50% bigger. Line them up and a two-inch domino eventually topples a tower. Your job is not to push every domino. It is to find the lead one.

The focusing question

Memorize this: “What is the ONE thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?”

Ask it about your year. Then your month. Then today. The answers stack into a straight line from today’s work to your biggest goal.

The magic is in the second half. “Easier or unnecessary.” You are not looking for a task. You are looking for a lever.

Time block it or lose it

Knowing your one thing is worthless without time to do it.

Block the first 2–4 hours of your day for it. Treat the block like a flight you cannot miss. Everything else — email, calls, meetings — happens after.

Protect the block. People will test it. Hold the line.

The lies that keep you stuck

  • “Everything matters equally.” It does not. Priority was a singular word for 500 years.
  • “Multitasking works.” It is just switching fast and doing both things worse.
  • “I need more discipline.” No. You need a habit. Discipline only starts the engine.

Your next action

  1. Ask the focusing question about this month. Write one answer.
  2. Block tomorrow’s first 90 minutes for it.
  3. Tell one person your block is off-limits.
  4. After the block, ask the question again for tomorrow.

One domino a day. That is the whole system. Push it.

Do not just read it. Implement it.
